If you already understand what DPIIT recognition unlocks (covered in our benefits overview), this post is the practical playbook: exactly which portal to use, every field the application asks for, the documents to have ready before you start, and the one section that causes most rejections. None of this costs anything — the application itself is entirely free.
Before You Start
DPIIT recognition can only be applied for once your entity already exists. If you have not yet incorporated, that comes first — as a Private Limited Company, LLP, registered Partnership Firm, or Cooperative Society. Once incorporated, you need the Certificate of Incorporation, PAN of the entity, and (if applicable) GST registration before starting the DPIIT application itself.
Step by Step: The NSWS Application
Step 1 — Go to nsws.gov.in
DPIIT recognition applications are filed through the National Single Window System, not directly on the older Startup India portal. Register or log in with your details.
Step 2 — Find the service
Use the search bar or the "Schemes and Services" section to find "Startup India Registration / DPIIT Recognition." Add it to your application list and proceed to the form.
Step 3 — Fill entity details
Entity name, CIN or LLPIN (from your incorporation certificate), date of incorporation, entity type, PAN, registered office address, state and district.
Step 4 — Fill contact and business details
Official email, phone number, website or app link if available, sector and sub-sector, current stage of the business, and employee count.
Step 5 — Write the innovation statement
This is the single most important field on the form — covered in detail below. Answer what problem your startup solves, how your product or service is different from what already exists, and what evidence of traction you have.
Step 6 — Upload documents
Attach the Certificate of Incorporation, PAN of the entity, and your supporting document — see the full checklist below.
Step 7 — Self-certify the declaration
Confirm that your entity meets all eligibility criteria. There is no officer visit or audit at this stage — the declaration is taken on trust, with the underlying facts verifiable later.
Step 8 — Submit and track
Submit the application and track its status through the NSWS dashboard. If DPIIT requests clarification, respond promptly — a slow response is one of the more avoidable ways an otherwise-eligible application stalls.
Typical turnaround: 2 to 14 working days for a complete, accurately filled application. The certificate, once issued, is downloadable from the NSWS dashboard, the Startup India dashboard, or DigiLocker, and carries a unique DPIIT recognition number you can verify on the Startup India portal.
Documents Checklist
| Document | Format / Notes |
|---|---|
| Certificate of Incorporation / Registration | PDF, issued by MCA (for Pvt Ltd/LLP) or the relevant Registrar (Partnership/Cooperative) |
| PAN of the entity | PDF or clear scan, entity PAN, not an individual director's PAN |
| Details of directors / partners | Names, DIN (for directors), contact details as entered in the form |
| Supporting document (pick one) | Pitch deck, business plan, proof of concept, patent, award, or an incubator letter of recommendation — PDF preferred |
| Authorisation letter | If someone other than a director or designated partner is filing on the entity's behalf |
| Deep Tech applicants only | Additional scientific/technical documentation, IP details, and R&D expenditure proof |
The Innovation Statement: Why Most Rejections Happen Here
The innovation statement is the narrative field explaining how your product or service is novel, technology-driven, or solves a problem in a genuinely new way. It is, by a wide margin, the most common reason applications get rejected — not because the startup is ineligible, but because the statement is written in generic language that could describe almost any business.
What a weak statement looks like
"We provide an innovative solution for a growing market with high scalability potential." This says nothing specific and gets rejected almost by default — it could be pasted into any application regardless of what the business actually does.
What an approvable statement actually answers
What specific problem does your startup solve? How is your product or service different from existing alternatives, and what technology or process makes that difference real? What evidence of traction exists — customers, revenue, pilots, awards? How does the business model scale?
