Payroll run and reported to HMRC in real time on or before every payday. Pension auto-enrolment duties and re-enrolment tracked.
What actually goes wrong

The pattern we see in almost
every UK company we take over.

✕VAT returns filed from a spreadsheet with a bridging tool bolted on, technically MTD-compliant but one broken link away from an HMRC penalty
✕Corporation Tax estimated at a flat 19% or 25% all year, with marginal relief never applied, so the year-end computation lands nowhere near the provision
✕Companies House confirmation statement missed because nobody owns the calendar — an automatic penalty and a strike-off warning follow
✕A director's loan account runs overdrawn past the year end without anyone flagging the Section 455 tax charge until the accountant asks, too late
✕Pension auto-enrolment set up once at hire and never revisited, so re-enrolment dates and opt-out re-checks are missed entirely
✕IR35 status for contractors decided once, informally, then never reassessed as the working relationship changes — a costly gap in an HMRC review
UK regulatory context

Three overlapping compliance obligations
that UK companies manage simultaneously.

UK VAT & MTD
VAT at 20% — Making Tax Digital mandatory
Registration is required once taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any 12-month period. Since April 2022, every VAT-registered business must keep digital records and file through MTD-compatible software with an unbroken digital link — no manual re-keying between systems. Quarterly returns are filed with HMRC.
Filing: Quarterly · Regulator: HMRC · Threshold: £90,000
CORPORATION TAX
19% to 25% — profit-banded
The small profits rate of 19% applies up to £50,000 of taxable profit; the main rate of 25% applies above £250,000. Profits in between attract marginal relief, tapering the effective rate. CT600 returns are due 12 months after the accounting period end; the tax itself is due 9 months and 1 day after.
Annual return · Regulator: HMRC · Rate: 19–25%
COMPANIES HOUSE
Annual accounts & confirmation statement
Annual accounts are due within 9 months of the accounting reference date. A confirmation statement confirming company, shareholder and PSC details is due at least once every 12 months. Small companies file under the FRS 102 1A or FRS 105 micro-entity regime. Late filing penalties are automatic and escalate with delay.
Annual · Regulator: Companies House · Mandatory
ALSO REQUIRED
PAYE payroll under Real Time Information (RTI) — HMRC must be notified on or before each payday. Pension auto-enrolment duties, including ongoing re-enrolment every 3 years. Section 455 tax on overdrawn director's loan accounts not repaid within 9 months of the year end. Each is a recurring obligation, not a one-time setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UK companies need to follow Making Tax Digital for VAT?+
Yes. Making Tax Digital for VAT has been mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses since April 2022, regardless of turnover. It requires digital record-keeping and VAT returns submitted through MTD-compatible software with a digital link between records and the return — a spreadsheet alone, without bridging software, is not compliant. We file UK VAT returns through Zoho Books or QuickBooks, both MTD-compatible.
What is UK Corporation Tax and what are the current rates?+
Corporation Tax is charged on a company's taxable profits. The main rate is 25% for profits above £250,000. A small profits rate of 19% applies to profits up to £50,000. Profits between £50,000 and £250,000 attract marginal relief, tapering the effective rate between the two. Returns (CT600) are filed with HMRC, normally 12 months after the accounting period ends, with the tax itself due 9 months and 1 day after the period end.
What does a UK company need to file with Companies House each year?+
Every UK limited company must file annual accounts with Companies House within 9 months of its accounting reference date, and a confirmation statement at least once every 12 months confirming company, shareholder and PSC details are current. Small companies can file under the FRS 102 Section 1A or FRS 105 micro-entity regime with reduced disclosure. Late filing carries automatic, escalating penalties regardless of whether any tax is owed.
Can you manage accounting for a UK company remotely?+
Yes. We manage UK company accounting entirely remotely using Zoho Books or QuickBooks — cloud platforms that allow document sharing, bank feed connections and real-time collaboration. Bank statements are shared via bank feed or secure upload. VAT returns are filed through MTD-compatible software. Monthly accounts are delivered by day 5. No UK office presence required.
